Signed 8″ x 10″ photo of General Matthew Ridgway. The photo has very little wear on the surface of the photo and a few small areas of wear and discoloration along the borders of the photo. The photo is signed and dated 1945.
General Matthew Ridgway – At the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Ridgway was the Assistant Division Commander of the 82nd Infantry Division, which at the time was in the process of formation. In August of 1941 Ridgway was promoted to Major General and given the command of the 82nd Division.
The 82nd Infantry Division had already been choosen to become one of the Army’s five new airborne divisions and on August 15, 1942 was re-designated as the 82nd Airborne Division. Ridgway helped plan the airborne element of the Invasion of Sicily, and in 1944 helped plan the airborne operations of Operation Overlord.
In the Battle of Normandy, he jumped with his troops and served at the front line until the 82nd was relived from front-line duty in early July. He was later given command of the XVIII Airborne Corps and was involved in the support of the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded during Operation Varsity by German grenade fragments in March of 1945.
In 1952 he replaced General Dwight D. Eisenhower as the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe for the fledgling North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
