Description
One of the best WW1 cavalry related broadside we have seen, highlighting its brief history from the Mexican Border period and WWI, and its unit designations. The 23 1/2 x 28 1/2 inch broadside on yellow paper is illustrated with a cavalryman seated behind his Colt “potato digger” machine gun, and a mounted trumpeter, printed by a Boston printer in 1919.
This unit began in 1916 as the 1st Squadron (Provisional) Massachusetts Cavalry with service on the Mexican Border, and became the 102nd Machine Gun Company, 26th Division (Yankee Division), and the smaller Headquarters Troops of the same division. The broadside mentions the nickname of the unit as the Boston Bulldogs, and illustrations of the bulldog can be seen in each corner (this bulldog was painted on the gas mask bags by the members of the 102nd MG Bn. during WW1).
The battle honors for WWI are listed, and mentions “60 Per Cent Casualties Many Citations For Bravery.”
The condition is excellent; recently framed (loose), and from a scrapbook for a DSC recipient who maintained a scrapbook that this broadside was once mounted within. When I purchased this broadside, I was aware of a scrapbook, that at the time was not available, but has now been acquired, and offered separately on site.
The broadside and scrapbook belonged to Lieutenant Maurice W. Ricker, a sergeant in the unit from Border to WWI serving in HQ Troop, until he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in the 6th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division for the remainder of the war. He no doubt continued in his affiliation with his original unit after the war.
The frame is available if picked up (this is how I purchased it). The broadside will be mailed without frame, unless arrangements are made by purchaser.
Condition is excellent, just folds, and the very slightest of a hole hardly visible.
Super!
