Description
Ex- President Millard Fillmore had this image taken in 1861 by O.B. Evans, New York (State) as a major in the Union Continentals. The Continentals were organized in Buffalo, New York. Most of these volunteers were local retired military officers and elderly but patriotism brought them out to form this company after President Lincoln’s call for 75,000 troops after the attack on Fort Sumter, SC.
Fillmore was elected with the rank of major by having already been commander in chief of the Army and Navy during his presidency from 1850 to 1853. They decided on wearing a uniform, a throwback to the Revolutionary days; notable here showing Fillmore in a tri-cornered hat.

The image is in fine condition, especially of an ex-president in uniform during the Civil War.
