Description
This is a nice example and so stamped in the sleeve lining, of a quartermaster purchased coat marked “JEFFERSON ARSENAL / UNMADE/ NOV 26 2 1 / 1901-1902.” These un-finished coats could be purchased from the quartermaster and then taken to a tailor and finish in an upgraded style beyond that regularly issued.
This infantry sergeant’s 5 button blouse had a decorative pattern lining put in, using a black cotton cloth and white thread, A double row of stitching on the cuff and on the collar (usually issued without any). Trousers show some accent stitching around pockets, and a worsted black wool material sewn into the single back pocket, and lines the opening.
A Pippey Contract garrison can is marked in the inside sweatband, “W.F. PIPPEY / CONTRACT JUNE 28 190- .” The cap wool is in fine condition. The left point of visor has come loose about 1/2 inch. Some of the stitching in the sweatband has popped. Lining shows some wear, a few small tears to lining in crown.
The coat and trousers both have minor moth issues, but all some enough to take care of. A nice set put away some time ago, and fresh to the market. No history.
