Description
This CDV of Sergeant Stephen W. Bickford is signed on the back with unit designation. A piece of paper has been added to this image below the photo identifying Bickford to Co. M, 14th Mass Heavy Artillery (the unit initial designation of 14th Mass Infantry shortly changes to 1st Mass HA).
After General Grant converted most of the heavy artillery units in defense of Washington to Infantry, Bickford was wounded on May 19, 1864 at the Battle of Spotsylvania CH, Va.
