Description
This large cheesebox canteen painted in blue with red trim (about 1/2 inch wide) around the circumference on the face of each side. On side painted in white with “No. 54.” Some think unit, but I believe a number to a member in a militia company. Three leather straps nailed on the outer hoop would have held a shoulder sling.
Construction is three pieces, an outer hoop nailed to side pieces. Glue was most likely used, but water in the canteen would cause the wood to swell, making the canteen virtually watertight. A small wood stopper is probably original to this canteen. Box nails used throughout. Size is 8 inches high. Circa 1820s.
Fine condition.
