CDV Signed – Rufus Livermore, Company B -6th Mass Infantry.
Rufus Livermore of Groton, Massachusetts, mustered into the 6th Mass Infantry as a private on April 15, 1861 at Providence, R.I. He and the 6th Mass Infantry were the first regiment to answer President Lincoln’s call for 75,000 volunteers to suppress the Rebellion, Their 3 month service involved mostly guard duty around the Capital, etc. They were mustered out in August of 1861,
On October 13, 1863, Livermore mustered into company C, 3rd Rhode Island Cavalry, who were assigned to the Department of the Gulf. During his service, Livermore was acting Commissary Sergeant, and a promotion to 2nd Lieutenant in March of 1864.
Livermore attended Lawrence (Groton) Academy, Groton, Ma, and perhaps some university in Rhode Island with the war began. He is seen here in civilian attire.
