Description

French Made Chausser’s Shako Worn By Federal Volunteers.

This is the French 1858 Chasseur pattern shako that was worn during the American Civil War, mainly by three volunteer  the Pennsylvania 62nd, and 83rd, and the Massachusetts 18th Volunteer Infantries.  The entire uniform for these regiments was completely French made, and about 10,000 sets were ordered during the early part of the war.

The shako all black leather construction with air vents incorporated on each side.  The shako plate has the American influence with a spread winged eagle with federal shield in paint, a top a large floral wreath with an infantry horn at the center with blue paint around the horn.  The stamped brass cockade is wired onto the front, and behind the eagle.  A plume of light blue over white wool may be a replacement, but is a period piece.

There is a complete chinstrap, and sweatband in very good + remaining inside.

Overall leather surfaces are very good, with some warping on the top of the crown.

The shako is approximately 6.5 inches high; the plate being 4 inches (without the cockade). No sizing given, but appears to be a smaller type.
