Indian Wars MOH Recipient Captain W.E. Wilder 4th U.S. Cavalry Document.
Signed by MOH recipient, Wilber E. Wilder, 4th Cavalry, Adjutant for Commandant of Cadets, Colonel Oswald H, Ernst, on Special Order No. 41, dated March 17, 1898. Written on “Headquarters U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., regarding a leave of absence for 2nd Lt. Julian R. Lindsey, 9th Cavalry.
Lindsey graduated from the USMA Class of 1892, was 2nd Lt. in the 9th Cav, and 1st Lt. in the 10th Cavalry, both black outfits. He was Adjutant General of Georgia up to becoming the Aide de Camp for General Adna Chaffee in the China Relief Expedition in 1900. He held several commands during WWI, and several cavalry regiments afterwards as a full colonel until his promotion to Brigadier General in 1934. He retired a Major General in 1942.
Wilber E. Wilder graduated from USMA, Class of 1877. He played a key role in the surrender of Geronimo in 1886; for a short time was acting superintendent of Yellowstone National Park, during March and June of 1899. Wilder saw action in the Spanish American War, Mexican Border – Pancho Villa Expedition, and in WWI commanded the 168th Infantry Brigade of the 84th Division. He retired as a Brigadier General.
On April 23rd, 1882, while serving with the 4th U.S. Cavalry, First Lieutenant Wilber E. Wilder was awarded the Medal of Honor, for “Assisting, under a heavy fire, to rescue a wounded comrade,” at Horseshoe Canyon, New Mexico. The medal was issued on 17 August, 1896.
