Description
CDV – Lieutenant Carter Co E 4th Mass Cavalry.
Lieutenant John H. Carter, was commissioned into Co. E, 4th Massachusetts Cavalry on January 27, 1864. He mustered out with the regiment at Richmond, Virginia. He was wounded on Sept. 29, 1864. He had prior service with the 5th Mass Infantry.
He had achieved rank as 2nd, and 1st Lieutenant, and Captain with Co. F on July 8, 1865.
Seated wear frock as 2nd Lieutenant. Signed on the back, “Lieut Carter / Co. E. 4th Mass Cav.”
