Description

Ferrotype Of a 1st Massachusetts Cavalryman.

Identified in pencil on the reverse, “John Conlan / 1 Mass Cav.”   There are two similarly named men in the 1st Mass, one is 44 years of age, so that left this soldier.  I purchased this just recently from a cavalry collection, and how the image is attributed I don’t know.

John Conlan enlisted in Sept. of 1861 as a private into Co. L. 1st Mass Cavalry, and transferred out on February 12, 1864, to the 4th Mass Cavalry.  He mustered out on November 7, 1865.

The small image shows Conlan in his forage cap, and sack coat, with shirt lapels covering coat collar.

Fine condition.
