Description
Discharge For A 3rd Massachusetts Cavalryman From Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
John Mitchell, from Providence, R.I. enlisted in the 3rd Mass. Cavalry in January of 1864, into Co. G., and mustered out on the 28th of September, 1865, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He would be commissioned a 1st Lt. in October of the same year. Some additional information is recorded on the discharge not normally seen, “Tel. instructions from Hd. Qt. Dept of Mo. and S.O. No. 35, Hd Qs U.S. forces Kans Terr, Sept.18th, 1865. Signed by W. H. Cunningham, 1st Lieut. Comd’y Company, and a captain from the 2nd U.S. Vol Infantry as mustering officer who’s name I can’t make out. Mitchell also had prior service with the 11th R.I. Infantry
The Regiment took part in the Grand review with Sheridan’s Cavalry corps and then proceeded in June to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and saw some service in Kansas and Nebraska during the summer of 1865.
Condition is very good with some old tape repairs to some fold areas.
Years ago before I knew what I had, a 3rd Mass veteran’s material was for sale in Leominster, Mass, and among his possessions was a Gallatin saddle. Wish I had that one back!
