Virginia Officer’s Service Visor Cap In Box & Accoutrements Etc.

This group of material belonged to Thomas Engel Bartenstein, a 2nd Lieutenant of the Warrenton Rifles, of Warrenton, Virginia. He, and his company C, served on the Mexican Border with the 2nd Virginia Infantry.  The list of items consists of:

  • Service visor cap, sold by S.N. Meyer, Washington, D.C., and his his initials inside the crown.  The cap is the federal pattern with the exception of the eagle insignia with the “Virginia” on the lower banner.  Sizing tag unreadable but assume the cap is 6 3/4- 6 7/8.  There are some moth holes, but can be repaired with spare material on the inside of the cap. Overall is fine.  Included the box, (military supplier label tattered).
  • Full dress belt with sword hangers, and tin box; maker M.C. Lilley & Co., Columbus, Ohio.  Belt is very good with some very light verdigris..
  • 1902 pattern dress shoulder knots in tin, and protective storage cloth; maker M.C. Lilley, No buttons..Very good.
  • Three pieces of insignia; “V.A.” collar insignia, small 1st Lt. rank bar, and a 1910 Rapid Fire medal.
  • Cabinet photo, 10×12″ of the Warrenton Rifles, id’d on the reverse, “Thomas E. Bartenstein / Lee’s Ridge Road, Warrenton, Va.” (some chipping to mount). Noted on the front, ” Thomas E. Bartenstein Warrenton Rifles in front of old Post Office junction of alex. Pike, main street & Winchester St. Warrenton, Va. about 1912. (probably 1914).
  • Cabinet photo, 7.5×12″ written on the bottom of image, “On the Border” / Brownsville, Texas  / July 1916   /  Officers, Second Virginia Infantry.” Bartenstein is identified by the “X” (last row – middle).  Mount was trimmed on the sides.
  • Copy of “New and Notes” from the Fauquier Historical Society, Warrenton, with an article on Thomas Bartenstein.
