Description
Antebellum -Civil War Era Militia NCO Sword. The sword blade is elliptical in form, being 27 inches in length. Beneath a shield shaped langet is a cartrouche for a European blade maker, most likely German. Helmet pommel with reeded bone handle attached to a simple cross guard with floral designs. Only an upper scabbard mount with floral decorated frog finial, and plain drag.
I have provided an engraving from Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper for Saturday, May 24, 1856, showing an NCO of the 7th Regiment New York wearing a very similar style sword, the design of these swords being very popular in the Pre Civil War years.
Fine condition, some light streaks from cleaning on the blade, the brass mounts have an untouched patina.
