WWII Shore Patrol Armband- ID’d To USS TORO (SS-422).
Made of black wool having sewn-on yellow letters with tie strings for the USS Toro’s appointed shore patrol to keep peace with their crew while on shore leave. Stenciled on the reverse, “USS TORO /SS -422.” Approximately 11 inches long (main armband). Some mothing to the the yellow letters.
USS Toro (SS-422) built at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, and launched 23 August, 1944; commissioned 18 December, 1944. She arrived at Pearl Harbor in April of 1945, and by war’s end had two battle stars for her 2 combat patrols. Toro was placed on the Atlantic Reserve Fleet in 1946. Recommissioned in 1947, part of Sub Squadron 2, Atlantic Fleet. During torpedo exercises, Toro sunk German U-530. She remained on duty, with various missions until 1963.
The armband can be from late wartime to Korean War era.
