Civil War Discharge For A Black Soldier In The 26th USCT.  Charles Carter mustered into Co. B, 26th U.S.C.T. in February of 1864.

This unit was organized at Riker’s Island, N.Y. Harbor, and assigned to the Department of the South, in April the same year.  The regiments saw action on John’s Island, Burden’s Causeway, Battle of Honey Hill, and Demonstrations on Charleston & Savannah Railroad, Devaux’s Neck, Tillifinny Station; all in South Carolina, and in the year 1864.  The regiment was ordered to Beaufort, SC in January 2, 1865, and had duty there until August 28, when mustered out of service.   The regiment lost during service 2 officers, 28 enlisted men killed, and mortally wounded, with 112 enlisted lost by disease.. Total 145 casualties.

The discharge was issued at Hilton Head, SC.  Carter was assigned to Captain William W. Tracy’s company B, and Tracy signs the document.  The mustering officer was Lester Smith, Bvt Major, 1st U.S. Infantry.  Charles Carter is listed as being born in Bradford, Co. Pennsylvania; was 19 years old when originally enlisting.  He was a laborer before the war.

Stamped by Paymaster as being paid at expiration of service at New York.
