Description

Civil War Sgt. Major’s Souvenir Box of Bullets. 121st New York Infantry.

This box of bullets was collected during the war by Henry Bradford Walker, one of which he “carried in shoulder for 13 months.”

This collection is contained in a small cardboard box that was repurposed for the collection, sectioned off and each numbered to correspond with the list of contents affixed to the lid.

NEW INFORMATION:

A kind follower has forwarded more information on Walker.  Henry Walker was a member of the 121st New York Infantry. He enlisted in August of 1862 and discharged in January of 1864. Promoted to Sergeant Major in Dec. of 1862, then 2nd lieutenant in May, 1863.  Henry Walker was wounded at the Battle of Salem Church, Va on May 3, 1863.

In each section, early mimeographed letters were glued down, and the bullet was recorded on the list seen on cover. I won’t record them, as the photographs with simply same me the time.

The box measures 3 x 4 inches. One section of the lid is missing with only the covering paper left partially remaining. some other repairs, and broken corners.  The lid is lined with a red silk.

A great little collection that was recently split up from a larger group sold at Heritage Auctions in June 8, 2013.

Not seldom does one find the bullet that a wounded Civil War veteran maintained as a keepsake.
