Description

USS SOUTH DAKOTA (ACR -9)- Armored Cruiser No. 9 Cap Tally.

Laid down in September of 1902, in San Francisco, and commissioned in 1908, assigned to the Armored Cruiser Squadron of the Pacific Fleet. She sailed southern Pacific waters, making many ports of call at the Admiralty Island, Japan, China, and more ports of call.  During WWI, she was sent to South American waters to patrol mostly the Brazilian ports, and in November just days before the Armistice, was escorting troops convoys, then made two trips back to the New York with returning U.S. Troops.  In 1919, USS South Dakota returned to her new station with the Asiatic Fleet. In 1920, her named was changed to USS Huron.

This black silk tally is 38 x 1.5 inches, with typical creases and folds. The gilt is mostly worn away to almost a faint bluish tint.

The next South Dakota BB-57 was launched in June of 1941, commissioned in 1942, and named tallies would not have been worn during the war, making this tally the ACR-9.
