Civil War Document – Signed By Brevet Brigadier General T.S. Bowers, then a Lieutenant Colonel of Volunteers Adjutant General Department.  The document, written on official Head Quarters Armies of the United States letterhead, dated at City Point. Va., November 11, 1864; Special Orders No, 125, assigning Captain William Colklesser, of the 1st Maryland Infantry to the Subsistence Department and report to LtCol. M.R. Morgan, Chief Commissary, Armies operating against Richmond for orders., “By Command of Lieut. Gen. Grant,   T.S. Bowers, Asst Adjt. Genl.”

Theodore Shelton Bowers, before the war was the editor of the “Register” a local democratic journal.  Bowers began the war as a private in the 48th Illinois Infantry, mustering into Co. “G” on October 25, 1861.  He was discharged for promotion on November 17, 1862. After returning to the regiment after recruitment duty at home, Bowers was assigned to General Grant’s Headquarter as clerical assistant. He then after held the position of ADC to Grant. While the Army was away on an expedition, the confederated captured Grant’s headquarters, but before Bowers was taken prisoner, he managed to start a fire and burn nearly all of the important documents, etc. at the camp.  He later made his escape the evening of capture. Bowers was highly complimented for his efforts and was presented a sword. Bowers’ work was so favored that Gen. Grant promoted him to major in the Regular Army, and remained on Grant’s staff until after the war.  In 1866, while trying to board a moving train, he was accidentally killed.
