Description
Federal Soldier Armed with Mississippi Rifle, Bayonet & Colt Revolver.
A 1/6th plate tintype with gilt frame, identified to William H. Gates, Private Co. D. 27th New York Vols, who enlisted July 4, 1861, and was discharged for disability in October of 1862, at Bakersville, Maryland.
The ID is written on a small section of paper, done by the previous collector who bought a good deal of family items from this estate many years ago (Gates Estate, New York).
Even thought there is some blemishes and rubbing, it is still a nice image showing this soldier with his Mississippi Rifle with sword bayonet attached. Loosely stuck into his waist belt is his Colt 49 Pocket revolver. All of the brass Gates is wearing was tinted with gilt paint.
Very good.
