CDV – Lieutenant Jewett McPherson 31st Maine Infantry. The image is identified in period ink on the mount below the image, and again on the reverse, which I believe strongly to be his autograph, “Lieut. Jewett McPherson / Bangor, Me.” Photographed as a end lieutenant, McPherson is wearing a sack coat, with forage cap beside him, while he grips the hilt of his 1850 foot officer’s sword.
Jewett McPherson, from Bangor, Maine, enlisted in October of 1864 as a sergeant in Co. L, 31st Maine Infantry, and mustered out on July 15, 1865. He had further promotion to 1st sergeant and 2nd Lieutenant. McPherson’s company L was consolidated with the 32nd Maine in December of 1864.
Photographed by A.M. Burnham, Bangor, Me.
Very good, with some light staining.
