Christopher Columbus Augur graduated from the USMA Class of 1843 (same class as U.S. Grant), and saw early action in the Mexican War, and action on the Western Frontier. At the beginning of the war he was a major in the 13th U.S. Infantry. and later promoted brigadier general of Vols in 1861, and a command of a division during the Battle of Cedar Mountain. Again promoted to major general of Vols in 1863 in Gen. Bank’s Army of the Gulf where he remained for a good part of the war. In October of 1863, Augur was given command of the the Department of Washington, and held that command until August of 1866.  He was present at the Peterson House where Abraham Lincoln was carried after being shot by John Wilkes Booth, and where he died several hours later.  After the Civil War, General Augur held several commands in the west, and later retired as a brigadier general in1885.
