CDV – Charles Augustus Ropes Dimon – 30th Mass & Colonel 1st U.S. Vol. Infantry – “Galvanized Yankees.”
Dimon would later be promoted to Brevet Brigadier General on 3/13/ 1865.
He enlisted as a private in the 8th Mass Vol. Infantry in April of 1861, and mustered out that August. He then enlisted in the 30th Mass Infantry with a commission into the Field & Staff in February, 1862, discharged for promotion in October of that year. Again, commissioned into the 2nd Louisiana Infantry in October of 1862, and resigned the next June, 1863. On March 8, 1864 he was promoted to colonel of the 1st US Volunteers, mustering out in November of 1865.
Colonel Dimon served with his regiment for awhile in the fighting around the Louisiana area, then ordered west to the Dakotas’ and Fort Rice on the Missouri River. After the war had ended, the 1st US Volunteers, made up of both loyal Louisianans, and ex Confederates, marched to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where they were finally mustered out in November of 1865.
Having served with General Benjamin Butler while in Louisiana, this connection garnered an position in the United States Cartridge Company after the war, and managed that company into the 70s-80s. He also served two times as the mayor of Lowell, Massachusetts.
