Identified 3rd U.S. Infantry Officer’s Uniform Grouping

$16,500.00

This grouping belonged to 1st Lieutenant George Brown Eckert, 3rd U.S. Infantry.  Like several items appearing on this week’s list, I don’t have time to provide detailed information concerning history, etc., as I have several shows in the weekends leading up to the Baltimore show later in March.  I will be displaying this group there, but am offering to any interested party prior to Baltimore.  NOTE, the overcoat in the main photo in offered in a separate listing, and not associated with the 3rd U.S. Infantry Grouping

The photographs show some items that i have added that can be offered with the group, or removed at the preference of the buyer. The lead photograph shows, an 1850 foot officer’s sword, gauntlets, Smith Patent shoulder straps, and a watch and chain, and a pair of boots. THE SWORD IS UNRELATED AND NO PART OF THIS GROUPING.

Provenance on this group: Ray Richey Civil War Museum in Fort Worth, Texas -sold through the Horse Solder, Gettysburg, Pa., June 2022. The group was initially purchased from Heritage Auctions in May of 2013.  When I purchased the group, there was no sword (1850 non-reg) and a pair of boots (sold separately ?),  not with the group when purchased,.  I assume the may have been sold separately as well,  With all the material that had come from that collection, there was much confusion at to what went with what.

Condition is excellent.  History places Eckert with the regiment during the Peninsula Campaign, The Seven Days, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville.  Eckert was wounded at the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, according the the research by the historian working for Heritage.  Eckert had prior service as a drummer with the Ringgold light Artillery, Pennsylvania First Defenders, Pennsylvania’s first troops to arrive at Washington, answering the call of President Lincoln for 75,000 volunteers to defend the Capital.

Having an hunger for regular army material of the 19th Century, I have found near complete grouping a rarity on the market.

The price quoted included all the material from the purchased group and the additional material listed above.
