Cabinet Photo of U.S. Marine Commandant Jacob Zeilin. He was the 7th commandant of the Marine Corps.  Born in 1806. He saw service in the Mexican War, Fleet Marine officer under Admiral Perry during his trip to Japan, wounded at the 1st Battle of Bull Run as commander of the Marine battalion, and appointed as commandant in 1864 (then colonel). Zeilin was promoted to Brigadier General in 1867, and in 1868 approved the design of the EGA (Eagle, Globe, and Anchor) insignia.  He retired after 45 years in the Corps 1 November, 1876, and died in Washington, D.C. in 1880.

The photo has no backmark, and since he is wearing the uniform of a brigadier general, the photo was taken from 1867 to 1876. I believe the image is more on the earlier side of this date range.
