10 Maynard Tape Primer Rolls Contained In The Japanned Tin. Patented in 1845. This a complete tin holding ten paper covered rolls, for use with Model 1855 Government rifled musket and carbine, as well as the pistol carbine. The system was used on many other firearms in the pre Civil War days.
The condition of the rolls is fine, The tin cap may not have had a label like the early production in brass which had Maynard’s Patent, Chicopee, Massachusetts address stamped on it.
Invented in the mid 50’s to alleviate the need for singly applied percussion caps. Each roll was loaded into into the compartment on the lockplate, and each time the hammer was pulled back in preparation to fire the weapon, an arm within the compartment would push a cap on the roll over the nipple of weapon.
A great accessory not as commonly found any more.
