Description
A nice example of the 1872 pattern officer’s forage cap made by Horstmann Bros. & Co., Philadelphia, circa late 1870s to about 1880. Interesting that Horstmann at this point when the hat was made, was still using Civil War era buttons. Fine quality wool cap with full lining of dark brown cotton, gathered in the center. Horstmann label is embossed in silver on the sweatband.
The bullion 1875 pattern crossed rifles infantry insignia is fine condition using silver bullion and gold wire for accent (rifle barrels). The insignia is sewn on.
At some point, something was placed on the crown of the cap, and whatever it was has left little trace.
No history with this one. The 12th Infantry was stationed throughout the Southwest at this period in time.
