Description

1820’s Massachusetts Militia Document Lot.  This lot of documents most likely originated in the Dorchester, Mass area, as three of the printed militia orders are from that city.  A fourth one is dated 1825, and from Chelmsford, Mass, but included.  Here is the list.

  • A 4 page printed GENERAL ORDERS, HQs, Boston, March, 22d, 1823. This copy was docketed to “Gen. Crawford.” The first and second pages cover the establishing of a uniform for the Mass Militia.  A very important document for historians and collectors to know what to look for as what was worn by the MVM in this period. It is signed (printed) William H. Sumner, Adj. Gen.  The next General Order on pages 3-4 are dated the 24th of March, covers a multitude of subjects, (see Photos). Has some folds, and needs to be ironed (properly), otherwise in fine condition.
  • Order to Appear, Dorchester, April 28th, 1823.  Signed by the company clerk, R.W. Fison.  Excellent condition.
  • Military Exemption, Dorchester, May 6th, 1823. Signed by John Meaes, Town Treasurer. $2 dollars paid to Abel Cushing for one year ending in May of 1824 – charging him money for exempting him from military service. Excellent.
  • Order to Appear for Company parade Sept. 27th, 1823, with printed signature of Company Clerk, Thomas W. Eustis. Fine +.
  • Order to Appear for Company parade at Chelmsford, Mass on Sept. 30, 1825 for review and inspection, and to bring at least 20 cartridges.  Fine +.
  • Roll and Return of the Artillery Company in the 18th Regiment (Mass Militia) 1853.  Lists company officers, and NCOs, along with 21 enlisted.  Needs researching.  Very good with some staining.
