1830’s New England Militia Captain’s Coatee

$4,200.00

1830’s New England Militia Captain’s Coatee.  One of the best examples we’ve owned over our 40 plus years of business.

The red wooi coatee, faced in white wool is highly embellished with the elaborate use of gold bullion, herringbone on the breast, decorative chevrons on the lower sleeves, and tails, along with oak leaves on the cuffs and the white wool fold back tails. Also bullion tape rank for captain, follows Army regulations similarly on the narrow sleeves indicative of the first quarter of the 19th Century. White wool covered buttons are used on the functional cuffs.

The high stand up collar is decorated with bullion and gilt sequin stars.  All of the 42 coat sized buttons used on the coatee are General Staff buttons made by Robinson & Jones.  Jones left the firm in the early 1830’s helping to place the coat in the early to mid 1830’s. The interior lining is fine, and the white silk tails, usually showing good amount of use as seen on other coats of the period are fine +.  Mothing is minimal overall. The most wear is in the inside collar area, with some fraying, etc.

Came out of southern Massachusetts estate without history of any nature.  The best a collector could hope for to serve and a period militia uniform in the early 19th C.
