Description
1847 List Of Clothing Sent To El Paso, Texas For The Army.
A long list of clothing and accoutrements issued to 6 companies of Dragoons, 2 companies of Artillery, 6 companies of Infantry, and camp and garrison equipage. This copy was made out by Brevet Captain A.W. Bowman, 3rd U.S. Infantry, RQM. The document is made up of three pieces of paper, joined by sealing wax, and measures, 8 x 28 inches long. All of the material was sent from New Orleans to El Paso, Texas in 1847, although not dated.
A wealth of information here in what was issued, For example, “6 yellow sashes,” 370 leather stocks, 300 tin canteens for the Dragoons. 122 valise knapsacks & straps, more canteens for the Artillery; some standout issues other than the usual.
All of this supply was signed by Andrew W. Bowman, USMA Class of 1837, 2nd, 1st lieutenant, and captain in the 3rd Infantry until promotion to major in 1862, in the 9th U.S. Infantry. After the Civil War, Bowman was commissioned as Lt.Col. of the 31st Infantry in June of 1867. Unassigned until 1869, but died that year before joining a few assignment in the 1869 restructuring of the Army in that year.
A great record of what the troops were wearing around the time of the Mexican War.
Fine condition.
