Description
1858 Blue Covered Bullseye 8 Ring Canteen & Sling.
A nice example of an 8 ring bullseye canteen with original sling, with pieced blue wool canteen. Complete with stopper which is attached to the sling by a period section of string. Most likely an earlier contract as the sling guide does not have a hold for attaching the later chains for attaching to stopper ring.
This canteen shows how contractors did not waste any material when producing covers; two sides were cut from a longer section, then each side was reversed with the short side seam showing opposite on either side. Light soiling on the wool. The linen sling is in great shape other than age old soiling, with the ends sewn together after folding the end and joining.
There are a few moth holes, but nothing substantial. The holes do show a bright tin below, suggesting a canteen that saw either light service for was never issued.
An excellent example.
