Description

1862 South Side Rail Road Company Stock Certificate.

This stock certificate for three shares in the company was issued in October of 1862 to Thomas Bauch & Son, signed by the President Thomas H. Campbell, and Treasurer Robert F. Jackson.  Has blind stamped seal, nice engraved vignette of a train, and old steam engine pulling cars for upper and lower borders.  Endorsed on the reverse by Bauch & Son, by J. F. Johnston, Attorney.

Measures 5.5 x 8 inches.

Very good condition with some light staining.

The railroad was formed in 1846, construction began in 1849, and completed in 1854.  The road connected City Point, on the James River, through Petersburg, to Lynchburg, Va.  The railroad held great significance to the Confederacy, as a major supply line, but later in the war, as federal troops threatened its take over, the confederate army destroyed a good deal of the line around the cities it went through. Once in federal hands, the railroad was rebuilt, and once again became a most needed supply line, helping to end the war in southern Virginia.
