1870 Milage Voucher To Various Forts- ADS By Capt. William Ludlow. This is an attached lot of two documents, hold copies belonging to Captain William Ludlow, while stationed in the Reconstruction south. The documents contain four autographs on both the milage voucher, and copy letter of orders for him to proceed to Forts Macon and Caswell, NC, Charlestown Harbor, SC, and Fort Pulaski, Ga.
William Ludlow, (1843 – 1901), was an officer in the Corps of Engineers, with service in the Civil War, Indian Wars, Spanish American War. He served on the Stanley’s Yellowstone Expedition into the Black Hills in Dakota Territory, along with Custer’s 7th Cavalry. I have included downloads of Capt. Ludlow with LTC Custer while hunting bear, and the panoramic photo of the officers of the 1874 Expedition (Ludlow identified on the near left). He oversaw the mapping and scientific data collecting on that expedition.
Ludlow was promoted to brigadier general of volunteers in May of 1898, and Chief Engineer. He commanded a brigade under Gen. Henry Lawton during the battle of El Caney and the siege of Santiago, Cuba. Much more.
I would think a scare autograph for the Indian Wars Custer collector.
