Description
1874 Headstall, Curb & Link Strap And Shoemaker Bit, with reins that look American issue, but later.
The 15th U.S. Cavalry was organized in 1901, and this 1874 headstall shows that this model was still in service as late as C-1906. The crown leather is stamped, “15A36” (15th Cav “A” troop, 36 equipment no. for trooper), “Rock Island Arsenal” with much of the stamp light from both wear and weak stamp on one side; and finally “20” (I believe an earlier stamp which also is found on cheek piece. Bullseye rosettes riveted in place and fine condition. Leather pieces all in very good-fine condition. Curb strap and link straps are in very good-fine condition as well.
The Shoemaker bit is in fine + condition with most of the nickel finish remaining, bosses affixed tightly and still show some lustre. “R I A” stamped on right cheek. The Shoemaker was service wide replaced beginning in 1901 for the Curb (Whipple) 1892 bit.
Reins appear to be military and may be state used. Roller buckles on full length reins of black bridle leather, gathered together by a brass rivet, and a tail extending 19 inches from rivet. Good serviceable leather.
A nice set with several great, hard to find components in this condition.
