Description
1876 U.S. Centennial Expo Medal- Set Of 4 Cased Medals, Dies by William Barber; dated 1876.
The obverse figure of a woman rising from a seated position, arm outstretched to 13 stars (colonies) with glory rays; in her right hand she holds a sword to keep the rest of the planet in line with her demands. Reverse shows a continuous laurel wreath and words commemorating the 100th anniversary of American Independence. Two each in the sizes of 57 and 38 mm- gilt and reddish bronze.
The medals are in fine plus condition, with the original case in excellent condition having a deep maroon velvet lining. A gorgeous set. Over 33,000 produced in 4 different sizes and finishes. How many sets of 4 were produced I don’t know, but relatively much fewer in number.
