Description
1878 Canteen With Sling & 1885 Pattern Cup. A great untouched piece that I have owned for a long time. The canteen is a Civil War issue smooth pattern with the 1878 modified version by adding the tin brackets that hold the sling rings. Early style “U.S.” stenciled marking on the 1878 canvas cover, and stenciled unit marking on the back side, “Co. B. 5th Regt.” There appears to be the number “7” about an inch above this stamp, and could be a soldier’s equipment number.
The sling of black bridle leather has some lightly stamped inspector’s marks, and the Rock Island Arsenal marks are nearly gone and hard to photograph. The leather slide are original to the sling, as well as the brass hangers. The leather is very good, and supple, but have never been touched for many many years. just like everything else.
The cup, is the 1885 pattern tin cup with the “US” stamped on the handle. Patina and rust mixed in have covered the surface of the cup for long time. No visible markings.
A nice canteen, sling, and cup for a regiment that has a great Indian Wars history.
