1880 Pattern Summer Helmet – Made For National Guard Use. Made by W.D. Cowan / Manufacturer / Newark, N.J. There are two labels for Cowan. Typical cork body covered in tan cotton. This Summer helmet has the air vents seen on some U.S. headgear, but not this pattern. A military reference stated these helmets appeared after 1889. Some of the vents have been found at Fort Mohave, AZ. The company letter “A” is a National Guard usage.
Fine condition, with some light toning to tan cotton. Vent at top is a replacement. The body is free of damage to the cork.
