Description
Offered here is a super rare dress coat for a Cavalry Ferrier, circa 1888-1900. The coat was custom made for this soldier by D. KLEIN And BROS., Philadelphia (I found reference to this firm still in operation in1905. No identification as to the owner.
Made in the model of 1885, with golden yellow trim. All of the 1885 General Service buttons are original to the coat.
The brassards were introduced in the 1888 Army Regulations for wear by specialist, such as ferriers, cooks, pioneers, etc. In 1885, the gold bullion chevrons were introduced for wear, but nothing was ever mentioned bullion brassards. Obviously, this soldier took it upon himself to upgrade his uniform appearance in a manor that suited him. I’m sure similar things were done by others, I have not noticed any other examples. The bullion used in the horseshoe insignia, is not the same as that of the regulation variety, but close. There are bullion service stripes sewn above the cuffs as well.
Overall, the coat is in fine condition, with a few moth holes, which do not detract at all, and some soiling.
Just a great piece to add to the late Indian Wars collection.
