1885 Cavalry Saber Belt & Modified Hangers. I married the the belt with the hangers together to offer with the coat is anyone had an interest. The model designation of 1885 saber belt consisted of the 1872 waist belt & buckle, utilizing a single brass slide that was used on the model 1872 cavalry saber belt. I have turned up a good deal of these ’85 hangers with bent up hook and it can be strongly assumed this was done to act as a dismount hook. It is possible that some remote posts, or just a post commander’s judgement, found it either necessary or convenient to use the modified hangers in this way.
The Model 1885 leather and brass saber hangers themselves were designed strictly as suspension straps (derived from the earlier 1859/1878 patterns) to hang the saber from the belt or saddle, relying on the separate belt-slide hook for foot maneuvers.
The hangers are unmarked. The belt has no visible markings. Leather is supple, but the outer surface is rough, and has seen a good amount of service. A nice addition having the brass spring loaded saber swivel snaps have been on these hangers for a long time.
A great rig for the money.
