Description
1896 Volunteer Signal Corps NCO’s Cap Insignia.
Worn from 1896 to 1905, and made of a gilt brass wreath with silver plated signal flags soldered to the wreath and has the 1896 pattern screw back device for attaching to the cap.
The brass numbers on these were used by volunteer companies, where the regular army used letters. In 1901, the War Department ordered these insignia to use only the silver insignia for enlisted, while the NCO maintained the wreath.
