1902 Full Dress Army General Officer’s Cap. Probably one of the best available on the market today, if not the best example. Sold by Pettibone Bros,. MFG. Co. / Cincinnati, O. Most elaborate workmanship with oak leaves and acorns prolifically applied to the leather visor and velvet band, extending upwards in the hat proper. A silver federal eagle at upper center. 1902 rimless eagle buttons and gilt chinstrap. The leather sweat band shows some light wear, and the band itself has come loose around most of the circumference.
The pattern, and use of the silver eagle, is most likely an embellishment by the general ordering the hat. Photos of general officers in this period suggest a “personal preference” (See Gen. Nelson Miles and his outlandish style).
