Description

1st U.S. Sharpshooters Letter From LtCol Casper Trepp.

The letter was written by Lieutenant Colonel Casper Trepp, Commanding the 1st Regiment of U.S. Sharpshooters, dated Oct. 3, 1863. Writing to New York Governor Horatio Seymour, Col. Trepp is asking for a commission of an experience sergeant then serving in the 14th U.S. Infantry.

Orderly Sergeant Jean Paul Rilliet, has also served in that capacity in both the Swiss and English armies.  (See photo of transcript of letter).

Casper Trepp, began is military career in Switzerland as a drill master under Garibaldi during the Crimean War. He was a captain in the British infantry and later served in the Royal Engineers before coming to America.  He is credited now as creating and organizing the U.S. Sharpshooters, yet because he was not a native American, Hiram Berdan, through his political connections got the go ahead to create the sharpshooters, and thus the credit, and notoriety.  Trepp was killed at the battle of Mine Run, Va. in November of 1863.

The letter is in fine condition, legible, and informative showing the lengths Trepp went to in obtaining the right men for this specialized unit.

Good letter.
