2nd Connecticut Artillery Privates Document – CDV Lot -SOLD

Charles G. Wheeler from Litchfield, Ct. enlisted in September, 1862 into the Conn. 2nd Heavy Artillery, and was discharged on June 2, 1865. He was wounded at Hatcher’s Run, Va. on February 6, 1865.

The lot contains a furlough document signed by AAG Drake De Kay, on April 2, 1863, and by the Adjutant of the 19th (2nd HA), 1st Lt. C.H. Deming.   De Kay’s bold signature was said to aid sentries in seeing passes and his signature in dim light. Probably one of the most bold of any signatures from the Civil War.  The second item is a pass signed by Colonel E.S. Kellogg, of the 2nd Ct. HA, allowing Wheeler to go to Alexandria, Va., May 1864.  Col. Kellogg was KIA at Cold Harbor, Va.   The discharge for Wheeler came in a heavy envelope id’d to the 19th Conn. Infantry, and his G.A.R. Post 34, Torrington, Ct.  The 19th Conn. was re-designated the 2nd HA in November of 1863. Finally a CDV of Wheeler  and his wife Mary (faint writing on the back in pencil). Note the odd hat being used by Wheeler.  Small but a nice lot of material for a wounded Civil War veteran.
