Description

2nd Pattern McKeever Cartridge Box.

This pattern incorporated a swelled compartment for the Springfield Trapdoor combination tool.  I held 20 rounds of .45/70 ammunition.

Marked on the back section of the closer strap (faint but visible) “WATERVLIET ARSENAL.”  The right side box panel, is unit marked, “25” over “I”  over “20.”  I believe the regiment in question here is the 25th, the last being an equipment number, but not fully knowing how each regiment marked their equipment, then that regimental number would be in reverse order.  Company “I” is certain, on that I’m safe.

Inspected on the inside leather “A.R. SMITH,” and a stamped “J F” which may has something to do with a control or assembly marking.

The black bridle leather is in very good condition, with the box showing use but well maintained. All brass staples and closer strap plate are tightly adhered.

A nice cartridge box for display.
