6th Plate Tintype of Cavalryman holding an E.A. Prescott Navy Revolver. This is a super image of a western cavalryman with an incredible painted backdrop. The camp scene is very busy with tent, accoutrements, cannon, and a two stacker river boat. Probably one of the scarcer revolvers used by Union troops is the Prescott Navy with a 7 1/2 inch barrel that this trooper his holding.
Flayderman states that only a few hundred were produced, and that the State of Kansas bought 400 of these in March of 1862. Kansas offered them to the Federal Government troops stationed in the state but were rejected. Most are believed to have been issued to the Kansas militia, or other were private purchase for personal use. Many of the Kansas cavalry regiments served in Kansas, and Arkansas, and quite possibly this could have been used by one of the regiments that hunted down Quantrill and his raiders.
The Prescott design was an infringement on the Rollin White patent and by legal action from Smith & Wesson, the manufacturing was stopped, thus the reason for the very limited quantity produced.
