Description
90th Infantry Division – 344th FA Trench Art Ashtray.
Made from a 105mm artillery shell (M14), dated 1944, and punch decorated with a scene of an American soldier running behind a running German soldier while he is bayoneting him in the rear. The American is wearing a M1917A1 helmet, and may have been made by a local maker (Frenchman?). His unit – 90th Infantry Division insignia and 344th F.A. Id., and a presentation, “To Rose From Moxie.”
The 4 holders are filed to better hold cigarettes. Base diameter is 4 5/8 inches.
Cleaned a long time ago, and brass polish residue highlights the punch holes.
The 90th ID was one of the Normandy assaulting units, with 5 campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland, and Central Europe. I have no information on “Moxie.”
A nice piece of WWII trench art with some history.
Fine condition.
