Description

Abbott & Co., New York, made many ferrotypes of important/well known personage of the Civil War era, nearly always seen in a small format, encased in a decorative gilt mat with hanging ring, and a color paper backing with the name of the individual on the back.

Usually seen is Abbott’s name and address printed on the back, but in this case for whatever reason was omitted.  The engraved border is identical to others; this most definitely being an Abbott image.

Thaddeus P. Mott was a state, federal army officer during the Civil War era, and later became a soldier of fortune.  He was a known adventurer having also been a sailor before the war serving on several clipper ships sailing to California in the early 1850’s; an officer serving with Garibaldi in Italy. After the Civil War he recruited both ex federal and confederate soldiers to serve in the Egyptian Army, where he held the rank of general.

During the American Civil War, Mott, was an officer in several units, both artillery and infantry (19th US infantry, briefly), and is photographed as an officer in the 3rd New York Light Battery.
