30 Photographs Taken In Nicaragua Circa 1927 By Harold B. Stauffer, Signal Corps Co. USMC. The Marines were called back in to renew political instability in the country. Marines mission to disarming both sides of the civil war, supervising elections, and form the Nicaraguan National Guard to further ensure stability without US military intervention. American business interest also played a major roll in using the marines, a force of over 3000 men was sent, a mission that would last from 1927 through 1932.
Taken during the 1927 period, this set of 30 photographs (5×7″), are a great cross section showing marine uniforms and gear, scenes in Nicaragua, officer group shots, mounted marines, marines photographed with local citizenry, local election monitored by the USMC, street scenes and parade, marines under voting signs, miniature statue of Liberty, Camp -tents scene, motorcycles with side cars and other vehicles, graveside service officiated by Marine general, US Marines headquarters (2nd Brigade), a marine prone firing a rifle, another showing a group firing in seated position, company inspection, office scene, marines on donkeys, and more.
Marine Corps photographer, Harold B. Stauffer, attached to the Brigade Signal Company. His first enlistment began in 1926- 1930, and he received the USMC Marine Good Conduct Medal #88340, and the USMC Expeditionary Medal M No. 728. During his first enlistment he photographed marines in varied dress, gear, training, policing, monitoring elections (Nicaragua), and much more. The over all group covers China, Port au Prince, Haiti, and, Nicaragua. I only have Stauffer’s photographs from these periods, of which this lot is a sampling.
