Description
American Pilot’s POW Wings – Camp Made.
Original camp made pilot wings with “POW” over the federal shield on the pilot wings. Made from lead which was found on discarded Red Cross food cans, or seals off of crates and boxes. This pair of wings has large lugs on the back that are holded to allow for a large safety pin to be inserted for wear. Many pilots, and other members of air crews who had lost their original wings or other insignia, made replacements, and many times changed the original look, to add, POW like on these wings, and like the other example I have photographed here.
This wing came from the collection of Art Beltrone, the author of “A Wartime Log.” The wings offered here, are featured on page 153, and I have indicated the same mark on the wing as seen in the book. Also a scratch through the “W” of POW is seen in this photo and on the wings offered.
3 inch wings.
Fine condition.
