Autographed Letter By Western Gunsmith & Dealer – John P. Lower of Denver, Colorado, dated April 10, 1879.
The letter is written entirely in Lower’s hand, on his letterhead, to the Sharps Rifle Co. He is ordering a case of 10 Borchardt Carbines in .45’70 caliber. “If not on hand please have make soon as you can and forward certainly by May, 10th. I have ……. finishing same by June 1st and shall rely on your sending the same more promptly than the 4 long Carbines ordered – February last. I have to furnish these off your list price laid down here so I shall expect your bottom cash discount on same. please answer by return mail. ……. ……… John P. Lower.”
The letter has some damage at the lower right corner, with some light soiling.
John Prey Lower was an old time western gunsmith and firearms dealer, who did business on a constant basis with Sam Colt, Sharps, Remington, Smith & Wesson, and many other big name firearms manufactures. He was friends, sold and repaired the firearms of the likes of Buffalo Bill Cody, Kit Carson, George and Tom Custer, and many Indians of several tribes came to his store to trade or purchase firearms. Born in Pennsylvania in 1833, and died at 84 in Denver in 1917.
